I know literally nothing about this topic, but that won't stop me from commenting hihi.

A guy I met did some work on a similar device, 
DS1287/1387

I don't know how similar/dissimilar they are to the device you're looking for, but if there are enough 8711 owners who need new chips, I bet this guy could make a replacement for a bulk/group purchase.
