I have a large assortment of Watkins-Johnson and other equipment for
sale.I reached the tipping point in my research on COMINT, SIGINT and
ELINT radio history where that work is more engrossing and time
consuming than the actual radios.Continuing to research and write has
taken up all the time I once had to restore and use the equipment.
For example, the National Academic of Engineering asked me for a short
biography of Dean Watkins like the one I wrote for them on Dick Johnson
(https://www.nae.edu/190574.aspx).In addition, I am working on a history
of the Watkins-Johnson company from its founding in 1957 to its
dispersal not long after the Berlin Wall came down.
At the same time, I am working on a biography of Ralph Grimm, the
founder of Communication Electronics, Inc (CEI) starting with his prewar
work on the first aircraft Integrated Landing Systems (ILS) to his early
death while attempting to build up the Ralph E Grimm Co. (REGCO) and
wrest back the business he had created from his discordant absorption by
Watkins-Johnson.Grimm’s career also includes working on the development
of the then secret LORAN-A navigation system while in the Coast Guard
and being head of engineering at Nems-Clarke.Under Grimm’s guidance,
Nems-Clarke captured the nascent VHF/UHF radio receiver market for
COMINT and SIGINT agencies in the US and Europe.
The prices on this list are firm and do not include packing or shipping,
which will be handled by the UPS Store. Discounts can only be discussed
if you will be driving to my house and picking up the items.Discounts
will be commensurate with the quantity you pick up.I do not want to
photograph or provide more detailed descriptions as one would for a sale
on eBane, so please don't ask. Ease in the transactions is a
significant factor for me.
Please be patient with the time it may take me to reply to your
inquiries.I will respond to all e-mails as quickly as I can.My goal is
to disperse this collection of stuff and center my focus on the research
and writing as easily as possible, not a simple task given the amount of
things that have accumulated in 30+ years of this hobby.
That said, if anyone is interested in coming here with a truck and
picking it all up, we can talk about other equipment and documentation
that could be included as a bonus for your efforts. For example, I have a
sizable collection of Pan-Man (RS-160) system components (receivers,
accessories, parts) and manuals.
The Pan-Man systemswere involved in some historically significant and
well known national security incidents for which I have uncovered
documentation. For example, declassified National Security Agency
documents list a Pan-Man system on the USS Pueblo when it seized by
North Korea. It was also the search receiver in the system (paired with
RS-180 hand-off receivers) hidden at Hokkaido in northern Japan that
found and recorded the Russia MiG pilot and ground communications just
before Korean Airlines KAL007 was shot down (a conversation released to
the press by President Reagan over the strenuous objections of the
NSA). For a brief overview and photos of some parts of the Pan-Man
system see:
http://watkins-johnson.terryo.org/surveillance-systems/RS-160/RS-160.htm).
