I had a similar problem with my 2050 several years ago.  I seem to remember the can assembly serving as a crystal oven.  There was some foam insulation inside which finally disintegrated causing a short, (discovered by systematically pulling out boards until I found the culprit board).  I had to use a bench supply while doing this since the main supply was permanently shot.  Anyway, I isolated the can, and put in a small, cooler switching supply which worked until I lost interest in this receiver; haven't turned it on in some time.
