My DMS-107-1 is certainly no brick. It isn't exactly a DX machine when used
with a simple antenna because its minimum BW is 20kHz and the front end is a
bit insensitive, but I hear many NDBs and there are AM stations all across
the dial. At 20kHz, the cutoff is sharp and deep enough that I usually have
no trouble with adjacent stations.
I use this and a WJ-9518BE for AM station monitoring and DXing.

The receivers are rock solid, and the filters are wonderful. I can hear and
understand weak stations with these bricks as well as or better than many
hotter receivers that don't measure up in the technical department.
The 9518 is SSB only but the calibration is spot on, and there is no
heterodyne audible on AM stations after just a few seconds of warm-up.

All the best,
Steve
