The 6790 is a great receiver for casual listening and it quite good if it
has all filter spots filled, and updated ROMs with better tuning rates and
VLF coverage. The real nice feature of this set is it repairable, everything
for it is available and if you get a rebuilt one, you will probably be good
for the next twenty years. I think its a good place to start. Prices are
reasonable and if you decide to upgrade you will usually have no problems
getting your money out.
Going for pure performance a WJ 8711A is at the top of my list. But you
cringe every time you turn it on fearing a $$$ failure. There is a SDR
version of that radio available which is more reliable but you lose that
classy box.
Bang for the buck goes to the Elecraft KX3. Receiver performance is at the
very top of the hill, supports SDR or box operation. Oh, and you get a
beautiful little QRP transceiver to boot.
Just my 2 cents,
73,
