Roofing filters make a big difference. Several modern receivers offer option to switch in more than one roofing filter. Elecraft K3 maybe a good choice since you can fit in a second receiver as option and of course use it to transmit. Good mixers, clean synthesizers are also big factors. Watkins 8718A MFP, Racal 3701 and some Rohde Schwarz are great receivers. Everyone has their favorites. Book by Fred Osterman Shortwave Receivers Past & Present can help you chose as well. Good antenna setup is also very important.

Good luck.

I found a very nice Racal 6790/GM that was renovated by Gary Wingert but I wonder if I should consider additional makes/models in selecting my first general coverage receiver.
