[Premium-Rx] WJ8711-1 Preamp fail

Greetings, anyone still around?
 
I was doing the monthly check of my venerable 8711-1 and found the pre-amp  
ineffective.
 
As I cycle thru the preamp, normal and attenuation positions, the noise  
decreases from preamp on down as it always has, but the signal level in the  
preamp position is easily 40-50 db down.
 
Any ideas, and is this a user serviceable thing or if I track it down will  
it be a surface mount issue I should avoid and be happy it works ok  
otherwise?
