WJ 8711, 8712,and HF-1000 Owners:
Bad Power Supplies can damage your radio. Three radios have been in the shop
with damaged RF Tuners. In each case the power supply was acting up or had
died completely. Nothing was shorted but in each case the power supply had
bad capacitors and in one case the controller IC was dead. When the power
supply starts to fail it takes longer and longer to start. This is usually
due to a leaky 150 uF or 120 uF HV capacitor. Since the amount of current
required to start is not available the power supply goes into hiccup mode.
The voltage rails jump up and down and so do all of the devices on those
rails. This is an unpredictable event similar to turning the power switch on
and off every 3 seconds. Damage to the 1st LO amplifier and the 1st
converter often occur. If your power supply is doing this don't wait until
it damages your radio. Install new capacitors ASAP. Use the right ones, not
the ones that come from Radio Shack, Frys, or eBay China. Manufacturers such
as Nichicon and Illinois Capacitor all have 105C low ESR parts that are
proper replacements.
