Dan,

   There is an active Eddystone User Group on Yahoo, also you might try contacting Geoff Steedman (MOBGS) he had a kit that added a rotary encoder to the 1650/6.
    BTW I have a 1650/6 which recently developed a problem with very low audio out - haven't had time to diagnose it.
