Unless you have a specific need -- say, your antenna is just feet in 
front of the aperture of an over-the-horizon radar facility, or you 
tied the far end off to the tower of a 50kW AM station -- you will 
find that the radio works much better without the preselector.  I 
have disconnected them from maybe a dozen 590/590As, but never once 
added one, and have never seen an RF environment where a 590/590A 
needed one -- including at crowded field day sites.  If you don't 
need it, it just loses you 3 to 6 dB of sensitivity and raises the 
noise level about 6 dB.
