[Premium-Rx] Every so often I just have to stop and ask myself

This affliction has probably reached "Black Plague" proportions when you
consider the numbers that are afflicted
and the numbers of receivers that each of us had pass through our hands in
that quest for the "Holy Grail." We
all know it isn't out there, yet "just one more receiveritis" has set in and
there is no known cure. Many years ago
I compiled a list with make, model number and serial number and whether it
had been sold/traded. I didn't start
that list until a few dozen had already passed through. I have 144 listed
and, sad to say only one remains in the
house. That being a highly modified Icom IC-746, loaded with filters and
modded for dc to daylight operation.

Like Mac, age (70) and a realization that no such magical receiver exists,
my one time vast collection has disappeared.
But, what a ride, I have tried just about everything that I desired and lots
of middle of the road receivers. Some
disappointed, some enthralled, Eddystone, TMC, Collins, Hammarlund,
National, Drake, Ten Tec, Yaesu, JRC, Hallicrafters,
AOR, Lowe, Lafayette, Allied. Echophone, R.F. Harris, Siemens, Icom, RCA,
Racal, Military Receivers, R-390/URR (no non-A's),
R-390A/URR (over 30) SP-600's (21) R-725, R-1051B, D and G, R-388 and
R-388A, Palstar, Eton, and some lesser forgotten
orphans.

I do still have two 1936 Zeniths, a 1940 Philco and a 1940 RCA19K console
that has spectacular audio and works very well
on the shortwave bands.

My wife will have an easy job when I'm
gone....................................

Subject says it all, I am damn near 70 years old, why just why do I
have this attraction for stand alone RECEIVERS, like most of us, over
the years at any one time I have had or presently have 1-3-5 + really
good receivers.
These receivers are typically expensive to very expensive $1,000 on the
low side to 4k plus on the high.. While they had/have many features for
their day.

There is hardly a receiver made today that comes as a part of a quality
Amateur Transceiver that wont run performance rings around most if not
all of our PREMIUM Rx's. The advent of roofing filters, full DSP
features throughout the set, size weight and add in reliability all the
other factors..

Yet i still am drawn back to stand alone receivers that are more prone
to needing expensive repairs take up more desk/rack space and do less.
Not withstanding less and less to listen to from 100kc -30mhz beyond ham
bands.

I now have come to also look upon this fine group as a "support group"
where friends don't let friends buy and rely on combination
receivers/transmitters.

What started this was the posting several weeks ago from the UK guys
offering WJ 8711A at i thought a reasonable price, then a friend
mentioned he was selling his FT-1000D and i asked myself what would my
friends on PremRx do... but i didn't wait, last night i bought the
FT-1000D

It must be so very hard to break a truly harmful addiction
[drugs/alcohol] if I can't even break my addiction to Premium Rx's ..
I need some sort of like a 12 step plan for guys like me ...

Thanks for listening. mac/mc w5mc
