Or if you get really stuck, and nothing like a bit of self publicity here, their is some PIC microcontroller code on my web site to convert BCD code into normal ASCII to drive modern off the shelf displays. No where near as good as fixing the proper ones I know, but may be good for fault finding, or a temporary fix while locating parts Etc...
