[Premium-Rx] WJ-8711A or WJ-8712P

Oh Michael, don't bring up the subject of "oxygen free copper cables". I
have a dear friend who is convinced that the audio on his TV set (digital of
course) sounds 100% better now that he has replaced the mains cord and
connector by some gold-plated/oxygen free cable and plug. The man who
supplies this stuff charged more than £100 for a 2 metre length of heavy
duty mains cable - God help us all.

Dear Pat

The harshness of the recovered audio of the 8711A was also discussed in
N9EWO's extensive review (it's still accessible via Google). It's almost
certainly the result of the the DSP processing. That's why the really keen
hifi enthusiasts still prefer analogue. I read a review of a new SME
turntable retailing for about UK£25,000. If you are a banker in the City
that is merely petty cash.

How much of the audio blurb amounts to "snake oil selling" I cannot say
(shades of "oxygen-free copper" cables) but certainly the MP3 standard is
only soso and better restricted to listening to Elton John on a smartphone
on the daily commuter train than a Schubert impromptu on the hifi at home.

There was also a discussion a week or two back on BBC Radio 3 by an engineer

(German I think) who was scathing of the current digital standards and is
trying to improve the digitisation processes.
