Dear Al

There is a short entry for the AN/WLR-6 in the "Jane" for 1979-80. The
manufacturer was GTE-Sylvania.

It states that the AN/WLR-6(V) is a highly sensitive and versatile radio
receiving system installed in submarines to intercept, analyse, record and
evaluate electro-magnetic signals. The system handles manual morse,
radioteleohone, radio relay and printer, radar and tty signals. The system
includes rf distribution equipment, receivers, analysis and demultiplexing
equipment, display equipment, DF gear, teleprinters, tape recorders, signal
monitoring and distribution kit.

It is configured in five operator positions situated in the sub's radio and
ECM rooms.

In 1965 Sylvania developed a prototype system consisting of 210 units for
major sub-surface reconnasaonce. Each consisted of 23 racks with over 200
units of various equipment. A total of 49 systems had been delivered.

Al's link to Wiki shows that a number of US Sturgeon class subs had their
hulls lengthened by 100 feet to accommodate ELINT gear. One hesitates to
think of the cost of this lot to the US Treasury.

Hope the above is of interest.
