Dear Jeff

Many thanks.  It confirms my suspicion that it was a submarine receiver, 
reinforced by the close affinity to the VLF version, which shouts 
"submarines" very loudly.

BTW I erroneously posted a reference to the later Telefunken e893.  It 
should have been the e-863.  There is a detailed description in Eric Red's 
book "HF-Funkempfanger".
