You are certainly not stupid but you may be old fashioned as you suggested.
Many thanks to Steve for backing up my thoughts in a much more technical
explanation than I could have offered. Several years ago, I also had a
similar problem with intermittent front panel displays on a Racal RA-6790. I
removed the four (4) front panel mounting screws and proceeded to clean the
panel to chassis mounting points. A rotary wire brush and a Dremel tool
corrected the problem. I cleaned the areas directly around the panel
mounting holes on the rear of the panel and the areas on the chassis flanges
where the panel was mounted. A really secure fastening afterward and the
problem was solved.  Lucky guess ?  Maybe, but it worked.
