Heinz --

About TenTec support -- I too own an RX-340 which after 20 some years of
collecting is my all time favorite receiver (other than the Chuck Rippel
R-390A that I can no longer lift and had to sell). The ergonomics of the
RX-340 just seem to suit me, not too many knobs or features and not too few
to get the job done and make for enjoyable listening.

I've owned several other TenTec pieces over the years and my experience with
their support people has always been over the phone. About 80% of the time
they are very responsive and the issues are resolved promptly. The other 20%
of the time I speak to someone who is very concerned and willing to help,
but I never hear back from him again. I even ordered a part one time, gave
them my credit card and nothing happened after that.

I'd give them a call. It's their baby and unlike so many of the wonderful
radios owned by list members, there actually is a manufacturer who has an
ongoing support department with reasonable labor rates. Take advantage of
it while you can.

Please keep us posted and let us know how the issues are resolved.

All the best,

Larry

Subject: [Premium-Rx] TenTec RX-340

Hello,
I have a problem with my TenTec RX-340 which I got from a 3rd hand owner.
Immediately after 'power on' it is totaly deaf. Within the next 10
minutes it slowy gets better, but sensitivity is still about 40dB down
compared to my Telefunken E1800/3. Deutsche Welle on 6,075kHz is at
about -80dBm while the E1800/3 has it at -40dBm using the same antenna.
I have to get my HP8640B out of storage to further investigate this.

I executed the BITE tests with following results:
BITE 1 FAIL
BITE 2 FAIL S/A: MIXER1
BITE 3 RESULT: 000:004

With my limited knowledge it appears that the mixer1 board is
defective. It seems somebody already changed the 2SC1971 transistor.

I contacted TenTec service department a week ago via eMail but no
response. I even sent a fax on late Thursday night, no reply so far.
This is not what I am used to. My former experience with TenTec service
was very good. I have an OMNI VI plus and had a few questions which were
answered within hours, but this was 12 or 13 years ago.

I would appreciate any comment regarding the cause for the failure of
the RX-340 or about the ususal TenTec service department response time.
