Today I had the happy delivery of a new baby WJ-8718A. It was a difficult
delivery and the labor pains lasted for three weeks. It was nearly a breech
birth but afterwards the mother and child are resting comfortable in the
radio room. This is one of the eBay specials that came with the ISB feature,
a full set of filters and pre-amp. It does not have the digital control
panel (happy with that). So far it fires up just fine and can easily pull in
the more common references (WWV and a few BCB stations).

Of course as with many WJ devices there is not an abundance of sources for a
service/ maintenance manual. Assuming that it will need to be gone over from
top to bottom does anyone have a source for a service manual? If I have to I
will go through a paywall for the materials but the quality of what ends up
being delivered/downloaded can vary significantly.

The box was wrapped in about 100 feet of greenish colored packing tape and
looked like a bundle of some illegal substance that ends up being smuggled
across the US/Mexico border. The postal guy even joked about that as they
had a bet in the office on what it could be. At first I said that no, I do
not get marijuana by USPS but this is a giant bindle of heroin <lol>. He
thought that was entertaining and I decided that truthfulness was better
than having the DEA show up at my house, thinking they were busting a major
smuggling operation. I spilled the beans on it being a radio and as his back
can attest to, I am always getting heavy packages from far off lands.

I hope to put this up against the RF-590 and RA-6790 this weekend for a
shoot-out. Of course it will not be fair as any comparisons should be done
on receivers that have at least seen a signal generator and calibration
setup in the last decade.
