It is indeed a sad day for broadcasting. With the severe budgetary issues in
Great Britain it is not a big surprise.

In the linked article I am bemused at the claims of impartiality in
broadcasting. All national broadcasters view the world though whatever
colored glasses that they may be looking through, compare that against their
national interest and that comes through into any news they may disseminate.
That is why we benefit from a wide assortment of opinions on world matters
with shortwave broadcasting being one of the few ways that vision could be
shared with the world.

There are probably some expatriates who will miss the familiar accent and
some of the more distinctly British programs (programmes) that BBC aired.
