[Premium-Rx] AEG TELEFUNKEN E1800/3 AGC QUESTION?

Seasons Greetings to all,
 
I am seriously investigating the E1800/3 AGC system used in the  DE1710/2 
Demodulator module. Hopefully with the intention of improving  the 
mediocre/poor performance in the "Fast Agc" mode. 
 
Detailed identical test results, carried out on two separate known  good 
units, do not agree with the (late?) documentation that I have  .
 
For example, there is a 1 second, 5dB/ms decay rate, commencing  at  the - 
0.5dBr level which occurs both in "Fast and Slow"  - when, according to my 
info, it should only occur when "Slow  Agc" is selected.
 
The unbelievable complexity makes me wonder why it was  totally over 
designed - or maybe it is like that just to defy  human intervention?
 
Is there anyone out there who is familiar and totally au  fait with this 
subject please?
