Michael.
I have the manual for the quad 8 - and it is also available for free as a download from somewhere (BAMA?).
The faults I have had...
723 regulator fail (usual)
Tantalum cap fail (usual)
Encoder tuning - dirt in the encoder mechanism
Memory battery leakage (beware)
Poor earth causing erratic tuning - this seems to be a common thread.
There seems to be some PCB differences between similar models - which hinder the 'board substitution' method of fault finding.
They have 'directed airflow' inside for cooling - so may overheat without certain panels fitted.
All that said - the build quality is incredibly good, and come with PCB extender board parked inside as standard. As long as its complete, its worth buying a broken one if the price is right. No MPU means few special components, and no software (hooray).

Dear Richard
I have only seen one W-J8888 in the flesh - it was at Telford a long time
ago - and I was greatly taken by its looks and beautiful build quality. Def
counts as a premium receiver for me at least.
Unfortunately it had a fault. It was the model with variable speed tuning.
When you stopped tuning the frequency display kept going, and when you
reversed tuning it overshot again like a twangy spring, and you could never
tune to the station you wanted. This looked like a seriously tedious
problem, and without a manual I was not tempted.
Much later I was told that this is quite a common problem and is caused by
an earthing fault. Do you you know of this problem and the cure?
