Kai, congratulations on your acquisition of the RuS EK070, they are fairly rare to find these days. You've put your finger on a few reasons why I enjoy mine - excellent audio and selectivity, simple and well thought out ergonomics. I have a late example of the EK070 that I bought from John English locally a few years ago and it came with the preselector box and manual.
Regarding the small screws, I assume you are talking about the ones that secure the top and bottom covers. I did have a problem with loosening some of these screws, I needed to remove the covers to clean the contacts on the plug-in modules. I found that I could loosen these screws with a philips blade screwdriver with a tip that fits the "X" very well and had a handle that gave me some leverage. These screws are stainless steel and may have some locktite. For anyone who needs to buy them, these small screws are available from McMaster-Carr online.
Good luck! Ron
Ron,
I made up my mind not to do the swap, and then three days later I found an EK070 for a good price...
So no news on VHF/UHF, but I can compare the EK070 and the HF1000A.
Results: the HF1000A beats the EK070 in some aspects, especially the sync AM detector and of course the flexibility regarding AGC and bandwidth, noise blanker and notch. The only little drwaback is the known distortion or plops sometimes in SSB.
But I also understand why the EK070 is an "outstanding receiver", the sound is really perfect, both in AM and SSB, ergonomics is really simple, and the boatanchor feeling is unbeatable. And the tuning wheel: ahhh!
I have a few questions regarding the EK070:
- mine does not have a "Schwelle" key as described in the manual, but an ENTER key instead. So: how can I change the "Schwelle" for scanning? Only via the GPIB-port?
- I want to do some cosmetic renovation work, but some of the small screws are incredible tight, I have no chance to loosen them. Any tips for me how to open them?
- Is there any possibility to change the AGC decay time? Even in the non-fast position, it is a bit too fast in my eyes.
I somebody is interested in the radio: let me know.
Best regards,
kai
