Interesting that my old "Stutz Bearcat" Hammarlund SP-600 with a product detector can always hear what those receivers hear with much better audio recovery and with much less expense.

YMMV

Watkins-Johnson did not make radio models to stock store shelves or please
radio hobbyists. They designed and built boxes for agencies to pursue
  their COMINT and SIGINT missions.

If they developed a platform, like the 871x series, they assembled each
version to tweak it for the performance the government customers
requested. They also built small batches and sometimes single radios that
  you will never see.

WJ radios are race cars. National security issues always insure whatever
you own is 3-4 generations behind state of the art (The 871x is about 7
generations back). If you can't handle old race cars, you can always go
back to toddling around with glitzy sedans from Amateur Electronics
  Supply.
