[Premium-Rx] TenTec Rx340 vs HF1000A

This does not answer your question, but I thought it might interest list
readers.

The Watkins-Johnson WJ-8711 and TenTec RX340 were competing products
designed in pursuit of a government contract. The WJ-8711 won the
contract. The contract had specifications on appearance, especially the
display and controls, which is unusual. That's why radios look vaguely
similar.

The HF-1000 was produced to gain entry into the commercial marketplace
with a variant of the WJ-8711. Customer requests for support of the
HF-1000 (not repair, but explaining to appliance operators how to hook
it up, use the controls...) overwhelmed the one person assigned to
support and eroded the profit margin to the point that WJ pulled the
plug on production and left the commercial ham market. Over the nearly
35 years the Watkins-Johnson marque existed, the HF-1000 was the only
radio they ever produced that was sold through commercial channels.
