This is an intriguing subject. I suspect it is a lot like buying
stereo speakers: There are far too many subjective factors involved to
come to an analytical solution. Some people far more discerning and
experienced than me currently speak highly of a the combination of the
Perseus Direct DSP radio, a premium sound card, and a good set of
headphones.
With respect to filtering, it is indeed possible to "massacre" the
implementation of DSP IF filtering, but it is also possible (with
care) to build very narrow, phase linear filters that do not exhibit
significant ringing. What intrigues me about the current generation of
DSP radios (RF-SPACE, Perseus, QS1R, HPSDR Mercury) is that there is
simply very little circuitry between the antenna and the demodulated
output. My QS1R has a LPF from the antenna, into the DAC, and that's
it. It's all digital after that. FWIW - I like my AR7030+, but I
haven't spent any money on nice headphones or sound cards yet :-).
Cheers,
