John, by and large, if you replace the old Nicad battery with a modern 
NiMH equivalent, you should not see any leakage problems in the future.

The exact replacements for the R590 as well as that for Racal RA6790/GM 
are both available from Mouser for around $10 each plus.   I just did 
one on the Harris here.  Made by Varta.  There is then little point in 
putting a battery anywhere else frankly, and in the Harris there is not 
a lot of space near the front panel and CPU board.  I would not put even 
a new Nicad anywhere near any electronics, it's really bad karma.
