[Premium-Rx] WJ8615D owners...a question for you on odd WJ8615D operation

I have a couple of WJ8615D receivers that are displaying what I think is odd operation. Here is what happens:
 
1. Receivers are entirely normal in all regards except the function of the manual gain control
2. Operation under AGC is normal
3. Selection of manual gain control takes place but use of the up/down arrow buttons results in no change to the manual gain control setting (no MGC control is possible).
 
These have two different versions of software ('E' and 'F' releases of software). BTW- its always a bit disconcerting when these go through their start up self test and show something like 'E.0.0.3'- always looks like an error code to me!
 
Is there an operator error problem here? Is this normal for some versions? Is MGC somehow disabled?
