Hi Bill,
Yes the 5050 has some puzzling features. Also be aware there are two
versions of this receiver, the 5050 and 5050A. The 5050A does not look the same as
the 5050 but they are very similar electronically so the 5050A manual will
work for the most part with the 5050. I have not been able to find a manual for
the 5050 after over a year of searching.
One of the puzzling features of the receiver is the BFO card is an OPTION
for this receiver. Stock from the factory it is equipped with SSB filters and
receives USB and LSB fine but for some reason the factory considered receiving
CW with narrower filters an option. If you wanted CW reception you ordered
the BFO card as an option with the receiver. Apparently there are a lot of
5050's floating around without the BFO card. I learned that the hard way when I
bought my 5050 from a seller on eBay. To me that would be like selling a car
with tires as an option! And of course the BFO cards are unavailable anywhere
in this day and age. The receiver is at least 20+ years old and forget
trying to contact the factory for any parts or service. You can still receive CW
but will have to do that in the SSB mode with wide filters.
I f I can be of help with your 5050 let me know. I am by no means an expert
on the radio but I have tried to learn about it as best I can.
