Well I hate to disagree slightly with you both :-) but there's what the
manual says and then there's the radios themselves.
I'm sitting here looking at three radios - two are marked "HF Receiver PRS
2280" on the front panel and one of these is marked "PRS 2280 HF Receiver"
on the rear cover. The second has the rear cover missing. The third radio
is marked "HF Receiver PRS 2282A" on the front panel and again "PRS 2280 HF
Receiver" on the rear cover.
All receivers have the normal front panel - tuning knob, displays, lots of
buttons etc but the 2282A has the digital BFO, a full set of 6 filters,
rather than 4 or 5 in the 2280s, and the addition of FM mode. Looking at the
back panel at least 1 of the modules in the 2282A has different output
connectors compared to the 2280. It's a bit hard to read the module
designations themselves as Plessey wrote them on to the labels by hand and
the ink tends to fade after a while.
Based on this, it looks like the series is the 2280 but there seems to be an
actual 2280 receiver, with a proper front panel and a 2282A receiver with a
proper front panel and some extra features. It's a mystery why this does
not appear to be the case according to the manual.

Hi John
Feel free to disagree, it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong :-), but
the manual is consistent on this throughout, it's not just in the model table,
and I don't think what you've pointed out is inconsistent with my previous
comments.
Later the manual goes into more detailed descriptions of the three models,
2281, 2282, and 2283, never a mention of an actual 2280 receiver, whilst
specifically stating that "the 2280 series comprises three basic versions, the
2281, 2282, and 2283".
I was aware of the later 2282 having some different rear connectors,
although wasn't aware of the digital BFO, and didn't realise it had become a 2282A,
but still don't believe there was ever an original "2280" that wasn't either
a 2281, 2282, or 2283.
In essence, all sets were 2280s and the model numbers were more a Plessey
"in house" way of distinguishing the variants, which in the case of the
original 2281 and 2282 was only the front panel, so I suppose they considered that
to be pretty obvious in itself.
However, since all sets were originally just marked as 2280 it does make
sense to me that the later 2282A was marked as such in order to distinguish it
from the earlier version.
Whether or not there was a corresponding 2281A I don't know.
I don't think there's really a significant right or wrong on this, I've
always considered the set as the 2280 anyway and don't see any reason to change
that, but was just agreeing with Michael's answer to Dave's question,
forgetting the 2282A for the moment, as to whether the 2280 and 2282 with full front
panels were different receivers, and the answer is still "no".:-)

Nigel
