Well,

Nothing beats the excitement of an old oatmeal container wrapped with some #18 enameled copper transformer wire to make a coil; some sandwich wax-paper, some tin foil, and some cardboard to make a condenser; an old Gillette Blue Blade for the detector; and a hi-impedance earphone. Ground it to the hot water heater register and connect a wire strung from the upstairs bedroom window out to the garage.

Best radio I ever had. And it counted toward my Bear Cub Scout Badge.
