[Premium-Rx] Why the high $ for NRD-630?

The JRC NRD-630 is a strange creature indeed.

It is a new design, made according to decade-old Japanese type acceptance specifications,
that have influenced the designs for Japanese marine radio receivers since the 60/70's.

These specifications assume the equipment to be operated by a Radio Officer.
Unfortunately for the JRC, the IMO and ITU passed the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
which, effective February 1 1999, abolished the Radio Officer onboard convention ships or "obliged vessels".

This fact is acknowledged by the statement "(excluding obliged vessels)" on the data sheet, most probably meaning that the NRD-630 does not have the necessary approvals to be part of a GMDSS bridge crew operated ship's radio station.

The remaining professional markets for the NRD-630 are therefore limited to the MF/HF coast station or HF air/ground station markets, which are quite small considering the difficulties to fund their operations.

It is no question that the NRD-630 is a good HF receiver, but it is unlikely to be sold in any significant numbers.

Speaking for myself, it does not cause me to phase out i.a. my SRT CR91 or Telefunken E1800, unless it becomes offered at a bargain price.
