I had a lot of responses, and I have replied directly to some on specific
points. I hope I can be as helpful to someone else on some other topic.

It seems I have a real problem with the amount of drift in my 340A /6. I
logged the drift on two consecutive days (it was a wet weekend) and the
total drift was 3000Hz in four hours. The drift tailed off nicely, and the
receiver seemed stable after that, but it seems far too much. The receiver
looks very clean, but I'll go round it and try changing the capacitors as a
start. I'm not sure of the vintage; it has a plate on the front that says it
is "serial 21". Perhaps I'll find a date inside.
