Dave - I have a 3701 and 3711 and a copy of the Operators Manual from Telford Electronics. You can obtain one from them:

I'm not certain what you have tried yet. Everything in the Ops Manual about filter selection is related to the menu operation. If you hit the Menu button four times you will find the BW List as an option under the M2 button. Hit it and you will see the USB LSB Sym Exit submenu. Under the Sym option you should be able to select or deselect the symmetrical filters. You may have tried all of this already, I dunno.
One thing - the manual states the IF/AF module is configured for use in either a single or dual receiver. If your friend's receiver is a 3701, then you might have a 3701 IF/AF module in your 3702 that works fully in his receiver and not yours. The Ops Manual does not say how to reconfigure the module, but maybe its in the schematic.
BTW, I am looking for a IF/AF module if you or anyone else knows where I can buy one. My 3701 has an annoying problem: after receiving on AM, it can take a minute for the BFO to be reconnected to the product detector. Either a cap or resistor is bad in the BFO attenuator/switch. Everything works fine if I wait up to a minute or so, depending on how long I've been in the AM mode.
I'll be out of touch for awhile, so I hope I've been helpful here. Telford sells copies of the manual. If you buy one, ask them to make sure the labels on all the buttons are legible in your copy.
You can contact me directly at my e-mail address if you wish.
