[Premium-Rx] Racal RA 1792 backlighting

I've recently acquired a late RA 1792 which has a couple of failed backlight
bulbs. The manual seems to suggest that they're 5V 0.3W types, which with
sixteen bulbs per display suggests a dissipation of 4.8W behind each panel.
This seems rather  a lot of heat to generate in close proximity to an
elderly LCD. 

I haven't yet established a UK source of this sort of bulb, but one obvious
thought is to replace them with LEDs. Has anyone tried this?
