I worked for a company that for a while owned Electro-Metrics
back in the mid 90s. The president of that company told me about
the Electro Metrics division and their products and called these things
to my attention (he knew I was into ham radio and rf listening as well
as running hardware R&D projects).

These units were around then - for both Tek and HP spectrum
analyzers as I remember and at least one of them had the capacity to do
a wide FM demodulation of a signal and then SSB demodulate FM-FDM-SSB
subcarriers from the signal baseband. This was quite common back then
for microwave links - but in the 12 years or so since most of those
have gone fully digital.

I didn't own a matching spectrum analyzer back then or I would
have tried to latch onto one...
