Blair,
Last winter I built a module to plug into my RA6830 that converts the 455
KHz IF to 7.6 KHz I/Q IF. Then I down loaded I2PHD software to run SDR
demodulation with a spectrum display. It works great.
There is a guy Tony Parks selling "Soft Rock 6" than can be converted with a
simple crystal change to almost any IF.
My TCI 8174 radio does the same thing but the operation is fixed. I2PHD
software is very user friendly and variable bandwidth.
Then there are the HPSDR guys who want to advance the state of the art.
They are going to sell kits in the future. gfz

Subject: [Premium-Rx] Software Defined Radio
Hi all:
I've heard that the next generation of receivers will be Software
Defined Radios. I understand it has the usual front end and IF,
but the IF is fed into a fast A-D converter and then the Digital
output is manipulated by a computer. Indeed the government
have been doing this for a while, and the first consumer products
are now available.
We have fine receivers now; many of which have IF outputs.
Why couldn't we obtain the software, plug a fast A-D converter
into our computer and feed it with the IF from our receiver?
I realize that I don't know what I'm talking about, but perhaps
you get my idea. Is this do-able/ desirable/ interesting?
Your thoughts?
sincerely
Blair
