Hi John:
Another option is discrete levels rather than continuous adjustment. For
example if you switch two lamps is series they get much dimmer, last
longer and don't generate any RFI. In a similar way you could switch in
power resistors. I think you will find that you really don't use all
the possible light levels, but rather have bright, and a soft mood level.
The power resistors don't necessarily need to be in the wall box, but
could be above or below it where there's more air flow for cooling.
