Thanks much to all who provided input on my newly acquired pair of 8712T
boxes. Very nice little radios, it seems. It turns out that they are
the straight 8712 (non A-model) boxes that provide 5 DSP IF bandwidths.
My long-term plans include writing a GUI app that emulates the front
panel of the HF-1000 and adds other neat capabilities such as DRM
demodulation in realtime. I'll post a link to the code after the
project is complete, but don't hold your breath... It turns out the the
firmware version reported by query is 1.4.0 which jives with the U12
EPROM labeled "8711 A2 U12 1.4.0". There is another EPROM labeled "871X
A2 U56 1.2.0". Not sure of the significance of that chip or what the
firmware version means. The T does in fact stand for TEMPEST as Gordon
and others had suspected. The boxes are very tight from an RF
standpoint (per TEMPEST spec :) and should help to keep digital hash
from the controlling PC out of the RX. Thanks to Len for his Delphi
controller app and command list, and thanks to Michael for the partial
manual pdfs - great help getting these beasts talking! Thanks again for
all the great info.

regards,
