I've not used the wj8712 but it was the earlier version, contemporary to the
8711. I currently only own 8712P, 8711A and HF1000A versions, but don't
have any 8712, 8712T, or 8712A.
The WJ8712P is a half-rack variant of the 8711A.
The WJ8712A is a small black-box version of the 8711A, without any front
panel (just the RS232 on front). This one is RS232 controlled-only.
The WJ8712T is said to be the Tempest version but I've never seen one -
perhaps someone else can comment. It is likely to be based upon the earlier
non-A version, but perhaps a current owner can confirm this?
There are certain options that are available on 8711A, 8712P, 8712A that
aren't available on all of these models. You'll have to check the old WJ or
BAE catalogs.
The WJ8711A, WJ8712P, and WJ8712A share a nearly common interface RS232
command set -- There are some difference in several areas that will require
you to get a manual if you want to be precise (a minor difference is the
model number when you query the receiver via the rs232). I had John Fallows
add the wj8712P to the ERGO program using a copy of one of my manuals.
Again, the RS232 command set for the particular receiver is documented in
the manual shipped with the receiver. Labview will work fine, or you can
write a program in Visual C++.
Good luck
Don

Subject: [Premium-Rx] WJ-8712 gurus?
Hi Folks,
I've searched the 4 pdf archive files to no avail, but can't quite figure
out how to do a search of the reflector text since the 4th archive file up
to the present. I'm sure there's been a bit of relevant traffic since then
but here goes: can anyone give me a quick tutorial on the differences
between the WJ-8712, 8712A, and 8712T and 8712P variants? I understand that
the A-model has enhanced DSP filtering performance. Is the T version a
variant of the vanilla 8712 or the 8712A? I've heard chatter about an ERGO
program that controls the rig, but I'd probably end up just rolling my own
using labview or labwindows anyway. Is there a standard RS-232 command set
that I can pipe instructions to/from the box? Sorry to rehash an old
thread, but if you can point me to text on this, I'd appreciate that as
well.
Thanks
adam, N1GX
