I have a fair amount of experience with USB to Serial convertors.  Now the results were mixed.  On my older laptops running Windows 98 I sometimes had a real problem with the serial device properly communicating with the computer.  Some convertors worked and others did not.  Running Windows XP Pro on a Dell laptop, and also an older IBM thinkpad...all worked perfectly.  With my Dell, I specifically ordered a serial port which has been a godsend.  Another option is to try a PCI card serial port convertor.  I bought a used on on eBay a while ago with 2 serial ports, and it has always run 100%.  ERGO4 is a wonderful program for controlling numerous receivers, including the Ten Tec RX-340.  I suspect that it would also run the 331.  You can download a trial version and see.
