I think the future of telecom will ultimately be IP based services like 
WIMAX.  The towers will still be there but they won't be recognizable as 
much as they are today as there'll be lots more of 'em, they'll be 
smaller, and linked together in a mesh network.   Big question now is 
whether the 2 and 3G cellular services will win, whether WIMAX nodes 
will pop up the way Wi-Fi did, and whether they all play nice together 
or not.   Google WIMAX or 802.16 for more info. 

Of course this means we'll be making phone calls using cool new VoIP 
phones in the 10 to 66 Ghz range while we're not surfing the web or 
watching TV on them!  Let's see, a quarter wave on  66 Ghz is...?
