600 KHz is also the standard IF frequency for the top-of-the-line military communications receivers made by the People's Republic of China.  I always wondered why, since it would seem a bad idea to pick an IF inside the AM broadcast band.  I also have a prototype HF SSB transceiver made by a firm in Southern California, and the receiver uses 5.0 MHz as the high IF, which seems a bad choice as well, but I guess with enough filtering it must not matter.
