Those wanting a fast cheap audio squelch might get a TenTec "Smart Squelch" 
kit.  It is designed to integrate a few seconds of signal above the ambient 
noise level and then "open" the speaker.

Changing the timing capacitor from 1 mfd to .1 mfd (or .01 - not sure since 
it's been awhile) makes it a fast acting audio squelch so that no 
information is lost.

Yes, susceptible to static crashes, etc, but for 95% of the time it's 
super, and I have them tacked onto my WJ-8718's and TenTec SP-325's.
