well more to the point on the [ ir ] remote, it offers several choices, manual selection of REMOTE operation, or when you do in fact use say a computer for full control of the 340, then of course this lite and it's operation is controlled by the operator from the computer .. Others have their own opinion, but the experience here says go with HRD, it covers it all,
<<WBN>> I downloade and installed the HRD program's latest version, and the only Ten-Tec rx it supports is the RX350...doesn't support the RX340. :( How were you able to use the program with the 340? I'd really like to try it, as the program appears to have everything I want.
some will say the n4py programs, I have used both, but never bothered to use the n4py but one sitting, after using it and HRD, to me it was an easy choice.. I think the PY program Carl never spent the time to avail his self of all the 340 features, and only emulated what he had already BROADLY created for the other various sets.. in fact he at one point even had the ability to TRANSMIT as a control item selection, I have yet to find the transmit function on my 340 ..
<<WBN>> I have not used Carl's program, but do use VE6MBA's ERGO4 progam which I have been using with one rx or another for years.
My only gripe with the 340 is it has no real MUTE ckt. I.e. nothing breaks the RF chain input, 340 muting only breaks the AF chain, but nothing for the RF path... in remote it first seems a bit awkward that you have no AF control, rather only the RF gain control... but then as you think about it, and if a customer had a bank of these sets just monitoring along, RF control is the way to control multiple sets in operation .. as such, the AF pot is the only analog function on the set .. meaning it's function can't be computer or remotely controlled ..
<<WBN>> As an SWL (i.e., not transmitting) audio mute is fine for me...I can understand the issue for a ham, though.
On options, I have asked Scott at TT multiple times about future use's of this OPTION, I keep asking for a clock and or additional antenna inputs.. but I think I not going to see these features..
<<WBN>> We'll just have to hope...eh? :)
so all in all I thoroughly enjoy the set, it suites all my needs and especially as the main receiver to all my Collins HF -80 series transmitters, and that is what I replaced was a 851s-1 receiver with this RX-340 and I have not looked back.. the 35 watt current draw is fine, the set has never run warm, much less hot .. and you have to love these new switching power supply's ... just find a plug, not matter the voltage .. the instruction book is lacking, but it presumes you are computer intuitive..
<<WBN>> Since I've been in the computer business for over 30 years, I guess I qualify on this count :)
gud luck mac/mc w5mc
<<WBN>> Thanks, Mac...I'm having a ball with the rx and will keep trying all the software I can find that drives it...nirvana has to be obtainable!

OK, it was early on Sunday AM after a long nite in front of the new toy, and for some reason I had IR on the brain. Of course, there is a button (not IR port) on the 340, as Paul Katz so graciously pointed out in an email. So, question 2 in my earlier post is, of course, moot (not to mention misguided!). I think I'll go take a nap now...
