Mark,
The radio you are talking about is the 8712P, p meaning front panel. I have
been told the interface connector in included in the basic 8712
configuration. So if you find a 8712 
All you need is the front panel assembly and maybe a software change. 8712
to 8712A
I think is a faster A/D and maybe more bits. The inside of a HF1000 has a
lot of open space so I bet the modules are just repackaged into the smaller
8712 case. Think back to
About 10 years when we bought the partial RA6830 chassis parts hoping to
someday find the rest of the story.  fc

While we are on the HF-1000, 8712 topic has anybody
successfully converted a 8712 to an HF-1000? By this I
mean adding a front panel so that you don't have to
use a PC to operate the receiver. I wonder if this is
even feasible I believe both receivers share alot of
the same hardware but not owning either I have no way
of checking this out.
