Hank -

I think you've got to try one before shedding your favorite receivers, and I
think Ten Tec still has a 30 day money back program, so that might be the best
way to go.

I've been comparing mine to an HF1000A for the last two weeks, and there's
not really alot of difference. But IMHO..............

The audio is better on the 340, although it still is digital and a touch
harsh if that bothers you, compared to say an 8718.

The blanker works very well when compared to the WJ, at least with the type
of noises that show up here, much less distortion intoduced when run at high
levels.

The knobs are cheap, but they turn just as well as more expensive ones so I
guess it doesn't really matter, the main tuning knob has a decent feel.

There's a lot to be said for the SAM operation in my book, and having the
wider roofing filter and being able to open up the selectivity past 8 khz yields
some really nice sounding SWBC when conditions are right.

I have a nagging feeling the skirt selectivity might be a little tighter on
the WJ, especially on narrow cw, and have absolutely no reason to believe thats
true other than the very subjective comparisons I've done. Might be an
artifact of different levels of ringing, or audio bandpass, and I doubt it makes
any difference in the end.

But I think you got to listen to it, and ought to do it before you let
anything you're fond of go. It's a really nice radio. A lot smarter people than me
on here can wax eloquent on what could be better, and if one of those things
bugs you it might not be a good choice, but its hard not to like it.

Scott
