WJ 8618B S1 receiver problemsHi,
John Collins here...
I'm assuming there is a FM broadcast signal on 100.1 where you are and that the rx is operating correctly with the exception of your observed issue. I have seen several of my 8617/8618 units do this if the AFC is turned on when the receiver is not already center-tuned to the signal in question...note I have one 8618 that does not do this (and I do not know why). I have also seen strange AFC behavior if the selected filter is not the optimum choice for the signal in question. Too narrow and too wide seem to confuse the rx. Correct filter, AFC on after properly tuned, etc gives rock solid AFC performance.
Alaso note that the AFC is gated off if the COR has not been tripped by a signal strong enough to open the squelch, as it were.
I know that present day rx's will capture over fairly wide tuning widths...I have not explored why the 8618's behave as I describe.
I hope this helps
John

When turning on the AFC, the frequency read out goes crazy with + or - digits, on FM 100.1 MHz+ or - 800 kHz.
Has anyone seen this before?
Start up is okay. I can get it to display the model and version . I can cause it to tune from zero to 1200 MHz.
Will the bite test give me any other information? Changing to the function and depressing the bite key. Nothing happens. S1 model, no bite card installed.
Thanks
Al
