Subject: [Premium-Rx] Palomar Antennas
I have a complete set of Palomar loops. The loops are ferrite rods except the HF loop that's pretty much useless. I'm not sure they even offer it anymore. At LF, they are ok, but a larger ferrite bar (I use one that's made up of 15 12" rods 30" long) will be much better. Palomar didn't use enough ferrite in their loops. The sensitivity is low for that reason. With a decent loop, the Q will be much larger and a multi-turn control on the capacitor is necessary. With these changes, this loop (no longer Palomar) will compete with just about any wire except long Beverage antennas at LF. Ferrite antennas lose their effectiveness above the BCB due to losses in the ferrite.

I bought a set of the Palomar loop antennas last year and I am very dissapointed with them.
I trid using them with my Tentec RX350. They don't work any better than a longwire.
I have not yet tried the Palomar with either the R390A or the Racal RA6790/GM.
I bought the Palamor primarily to take to the beach with the Tentec. There is little possibility to rig an antenna at the beach.
So, the question is, is it antenna malfunction or operator malfunction ?
Comments, please.
Thank you.
Kindest regards,
Dave

I
bought a Polamar magnetic antenna kit and for a kick decided to QSL the
whole US BC band in one night. I sent a report to a station in Southwest
Oklahoma that had a cardioid pattern aimed at New Mexico. Being in
Southern Minnesota I was in the null of their pattern; I got a long
letter from their engineer asking what kind of radio and antenna I had
to be able to do that.
