[Premium-Rx] NRD 240 - review | data?

Mohan,

No hands-on experience here, and I can't speak to the specific performance
but I expect you'd find the NRD-240's internal design and specific features
quite similar to the consumer NRD-535, except for the TCXO and
digitally-synthesized secondary controls (BFO, PBS, etc.). And, of course,
big.

The NRD-240 was JRC's first attempt to produce an "all-in-one" model,
replacing the NRD-9X series (see below). They also modernized their front
panel design, and found room for a tiny forward-firing speaker, by having
fewer variable (encoder) controls, and replacing all mechanical toggle
switches with momentary pushbuttons. And they added integrated scan/sweep.
MHz/channel selection is by keypad entry instead of the familiar JRC knob.
Only semi-successful from an ergonomic standpoint: Cramming the Main Tune,
BFO, SSB Clarifier and PBS onto one main knob is not especially convenient.
The individual Mode, Bandwidth and AGC selectors were replaced by
carousel-type pushbuttons, which are space saving but not nice.

With the NRD-301A, JRC found a compromise, going back to a (light-detent)
MHz/channel selector knob, dispensing with the keypad, returning to
individual Mode and Bandwidth buttons, and restoring the separate PBS
control.

Most of the years the NRD-240 was in production, JRC continued to sell the
earlier NRD-9X series, and they shortly thereafter introduced the NRD-301A.
So the NRD-240 would be considerably more difficult to find than an NRD-93
or NRD-301A. NRD-240's occasionally surface on Yahoo Japan Auctions,
Marintec Club (www.marintec.jp), or Ham Shop Izumi
(http://yamaga.com/izumi/), but are less often seen outside Japan.

Anyone else?

-----Original Message-----
hello!

I am wondering if someone here has used a NRD-240 and am curious to know
of your experiences. A quick search on google did not really turn up
anything interesting. The Osterman book rates it highly, but I am very
interested to hear from you on this list! :)

Does anyone have datasheets, or catalog information?

Does anyone have reviews of this receiver?

What would be the price of one, if one can be found at all?

Thanks and best regards
