follow on .. more BPL .. look at the legislators who support BPL in your states, it's the young ones with no war chest full of money, the sage old legislators have already been given their marching orders [ $$$$ ] by the Verizons, Timewarner's and SBC's, Look at Warren Buffets buying habits, they have not earmarked any big chunks of dough for this BPL future effort or success. My meager Fidelity Technology fund has not gone out and pissed off a big effort on BPL .. John Chambers is not loosing sleep over BPL against the new WFI chip sets..

But we have our own in-house authority or man in the know, Moneybags Wallace can give us guidance as to where Qcom sees this as already passé technology or is it real .. OK I'll stop ranting on BPL v. mac/mc

Least I force or leaders to tell me im off the icecap , and the summer thaw is in place ..

Qualifying remark: use your delete key at any time .. That said, we as amateurs over the past 18-24 months have pretty much banded together and aligned ourselves against BPL and it's been a worthwhile rallying cause. I see reports frequently that " TRIALS " of BPL technology are being conducted. and most often 3, 5, 6 months later these trials are concluded, and no BPL is really fielded.. here in Texas we have BANDED together state wide and regionally at the required scare times and for the largest part beat back the initial BPL test sites and efforts.

To my knowledge and best belief NO REAL up and functioning BPL system is real, that is, is there really a instance where a BPL service is being offered and accepted on a wide base of customers, i'm asking if we know of an area where the area is served by BPL and they have REAL customers in a quantity like DSL or Cable Broadband . where whole neighborhoods or community's are signing up for BPL and using it with success..

My point is two fold, 1] I dont see it really out here competing head to head in the market place, 2] I dont see real company's building the required infrastructure to support BPL . Company's are not spending big chunks of capitol to build this out, I dont see public offerings to savvy investors, or investors rushing to throw in money to get on this BPL bandwagon..

I'm all for fighting the BPL as we have done over these past almost 2 years. I just dont think the threat is going to materialize, investors are not seeing this with big rewards of profits, the next logical ones to provide it [ public utility's ] are not expending much of their own dough to field this, they are making small test grids available to brokers who are promoting BPL , but utility company's are not spending their own capitol to build up BPL..

I think it's going to die it's own death for lack of real industry support, that if it does ever start to take off, the existing more known providers will simply cut market pricing to temporally compete to keep the existing customers, for the large part America is already built out with ample providers who's customer base is large enough that they [ existing providers ] can withstand a challenger with the first blush and not drop pricing, if it looks like the threat will become real and garner market share, then existing providers simply cut prices for a time. BPL fades away .. prices likely go back up.

Look at Cell phone build out, the market is saturated by 3 popular providers, how many of us are not on some plan that offers a zillion minutes to dollar ratio that it's no longer a monthly scare to open your cell phone bill, cell phone sites go begging for users, celltowers in many instances stand half finished, the market is saturated, the only thing keeping or supporting growth is new features within the already existing infrastructure.

Likely more of you will offer more information to put me back to thinking BPL is a looming threat, and indeed if this is my just not seeing the whole picture, then im glad to have it presented so I can leave the state of complacency, and armor up for the BPL fight .. comments and experiences welcomed, thank you all for the time .. mac/mc w5mc

    Gentlemen:

I am forwarding this post which was taken from the San Diego Microwave Club's website. It was posted by Brian Comer, a member of both the Microwave and Premium-Rx List.

As I reviewed the information presented in the article the quotation by Mr. Jaffery, "there are no longer any serious technical limitations to the deployment of BPL for high-speed Internet access." caught my eye. Thinking he must have a technical background that would justify his proclamation, I read his bio (see his bio at "President and CEO" link), then I checked QRZ, both failed to mention technical qualifications.

Perhaps this is unprofessional, but I think his technical skill level is limited to counting beans.

Report Predicts Rapid Growth For BPL-Access

Market research specialist Telecom Trends International is heralding the fast growth of broadband powerline communications as an access technology. The firm's newly released report, "Broadband Powerline Communications: Ready for Take-Off," states that Broadband Powerline Communications for access applications (BPL-Access) is well
positioned to compete head-on with DSL and cable modem technologies for a share of the broadband access market. BPL-Access uses the electricity power grid to bring broadband signals into buildings. The report estimates that the BPL-Access services market generated $57.1 million in revenue worldwide in 2004, and projects that by 2011, BPL-Access will generate $4.4 billion in revenue worldwide. According to Naqi Jaffery, President, of Telecom Trends International, The report adds that there is no global standard for BPL-Access, but the use of the existing infrastructure translates into low cost of deployment and low cost for customers.
